Istanbul to Host Inter-Parliamentary Union General Assembly Amidst Global Tensions

Istanbul, April 10 – The global parliamentary community will converge in Istanbul from April 15-19 for the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). This significant event, hosted by Turkey for the fourth time, is expected to draw a record number of participants, including parliamentarians and parliamentary speakers from around the world.

Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), Numan Kurtulmuş, announced that the assembly, which will take place at the Bomonti Congress Center, is being meticulously organized to reflect Turkey’s esteemed reputation on the international stage.

IPU Followed by NATO Summit in Istanbul

The IPU, established in 1889, has previously held its general assemblies in Turkey in 1934, 1951, and 1996. The IPU secretariat has informed the TBMM of the expectation of record attendance at the Istanbul summit, underscoring the event’s growing importance.

Kurtulmuş also revealed that following the IPU General Assembly, Istanbul will host the NATO Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit on June 28-29, further solidifying the city’s role as a hub for international diplomacy and parliamentary dialogue.

The 152nd General Assembly is anticipated to welcome 2,422 participants at parliamentary and diplomatic levels, representing 146 international organizations. This high level of participation highlights the critical discussions expected to take place, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its global ramifications.

Iran Confirms Attendance, Israel Does Not

Notably, Kurtulmuş confirmed that Iran has registered to attend the General Assembly, while Israel has not. This detail adds another layer of geopolitical significance to the event, as discussions on regional conflicts are expected to feature prominently.

The IPU General Assembly serves as a vital platform for parliamentary diplomacy, fostering cooperation and dialogue among nations on pressing global issues. The record attendance and the backdrop of heightened international tensions underscore the crucial role Istanbul will play in facilitating these discussions.

The meticulous preparations by the TBMM aim to ensure a successful and impactful assembly, reinforcing Turkey’s commitment to multilateralism and its capacity to host major international events.
